Hydrated lime life-cycle assessment: Current and future scenarios in four EU countries

The environmental load associated to Hydrated Lime (HL) products is attributed the limestone decomposition and industrial production (combustion in kiln, electricity, transports, etc.). Although fuel electricity mix used factory can be critical, no records of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) have been found addressing this for HL. Considering current crisis, a shift more sustainable sources energy expected. This paper studies, within SUBLime EU network, effect HL plant, Germany, Belgium, Portugal Spain, as well future scenarios. A theoretical Cradle-to-Gate Inventory was developed scenario analysis, namely decarbonisation matrix replacement hard coal by natural gas (NG) biomass (B) mix. LCA 2020 shows that, 9 out 15 indicators, consumption significant. In terms Global Warming Potential (GWP), 0.94 kg CO2 eq/kg are produced. Spain Belgium shown better performance followed Germany. results scenarios show that almost 100% renewable energies reduce their sharing all indicators.
